This page describes the 2020 amendments to Japan's Personal Information Protection Law. The amended law was promulgated on June 12, 2020, and will be fully implemented on April 1, 2022. Key changes include increased penalties for violations of PPC orders and false reports. Prison sentences for command violations increased from six months to one year, and fines increased from 300,000 yen to 1 million yen for individuals and up to 100 million yen for corporations. Penalties for false reporting also increased. The law definition penalties became effective on December 12, 2020. Guidelines and implementation measures are being developed.
