The table displays 20 designated cities with their populations, designation dates, and related ordinances. Yokohama is the largest with approximately 3.78 million residents. The first five cities were designated on September 1, 1956, and subsequent designations occurred gradually, with Kumamoto being the most recent on April 1, 2012. Population figures are based on confirmed 2020 Census data.
