This page presents the preliminary results of the 2015 National Urban Traffic Characteristics Survey. The percentage of people traveling on survey days reached historic lows since the survey began in 1987: 80.9% on weekdays and 59.9% on weekends. Daily trip frequency also hit record lows at 2.17 trips on weekdays and 1.68 on weekends. An aging population with lower mobility and declining trip frequency among younger people contribute to this trend. In major metropolitan areas, public transportation usage is increasing while car usage decreases, whereas regional cities show the opposite pattern. Further analysis of relationships between personal attributes and transportation mode usage is planned.
