This page announces that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has decided on a new technology development project under the Railway Technology Development and Promotion System. Toshiba Corporation was selected to implement technology development for promoting autonomous train operation. To address future driver shortages, the project verifies technologies on actual railway lines, including obstacle detection considering weather conditions, small long-distance LiDAR sensing and ranging accuracy improvement, and vehicle position measurement without ground transponders. These technologies will support autonomous operation system implementation and advancement.
