This page is a press release from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism regarding earthquake-triggered landslide alert criteria. Following a magnitude earthquake in Kumamoto's Aso region on November 25 that recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 5-strong, the ministry implemented provisional lowered thresholds for landslide warnings in affected municipalities. Due to weakened ground conditions increasing rainfall-related landslide risks, alert standards were set at 80% of normal levels for Sanzan Village. The ministry plans to continue monitoring the relationship between post-earthquake rainfall and landslides, adjusting criteria as needed.
