On February 23, 2018, Transportation Minister Ishii presented the designation certificate to Yamaguchi Governor Muraoka. This is the first designation in western Japan. Japan relies almost entirely on imports for resources and energy, making stable and affordable imports crucial for industrial competitiveness and employment. As an international bulk strategy port, Tokuyama-Matsushima Port plays a vital role supporting coal imports for western Japanese companies. The designation enables tax incentives for cargo handling equipment and infrastructure development for larger vessels.
