About this page
This page describes the "Local Support Team" initiative by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Launched in FY2020, the program assigns young volunteer staff to small municipalities in disadvantaged areas to support local issue resolution. Expanded in FY2022 with recruitment of target municipalities and collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Support team members work in groups of approximately two, assigned to one municipality for a two-year term. Target municipalities are small towns in disadvantaged regions including snowy areas, peninsulas, remote islands, and depopulated areas. Activity reports from FY2022-2025 are published online.
