This page outlines the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's efforts to conserve and restore Lake Biwa. Lake Biwa is a vital water resource supporting approximately 14 million people in the Kinki region and is a world-renowned ancient lake with over 4 million years of history, containing diverse ecosystems with over 60 endemic species. The Law Concerning Conservation and Restoration of Lake Biwa was enacted in 2015 to address challenges including water pollution, invasive species, and excessive aquatic weeds. Multiple relevant ministries established a basic policy framework, and Shiga Prefecture formulated a conservation and restoration plan. A promotion council has been established to coordinate conservation efforts among related prefectures and designated cities.
