This page provides an overview of Kansai International Airport (KIX), Japan's first 24-hour international airport, which opened in September 1994. Built on landfill 5 kilometers offshore in the Senshu area southeast of Osaka Bay, KIX was constructed to address environmental issues at Osaka International Airport while meeting growing aviation demands in the Kansai region. The airport prioritizes environmental protection and is operated by Kansai International Airport Co., Ltd., a special public corporation jointly established by national and local governments and the private sector. KIX has developed into an international hub airport serving the Kansai region.
