This page outlines Japan's national efforts to prevent and mitigate overtourism. As domestic and international tourism demand rapidly recovers, congestion and behavioral issues in some popular destinations have negatively impacted local residents' quality of life and visitor satisfaction. To address these challenges while achieving sustainable tourism development, the Japan Tourism Agency provides comprehensive support to communities implementing region-specific measures. The agency has established a countermeasure package and selected 26 pioneering model regions to develop best-practice examples. A consultation window has been established to assist local governments and destination management organizations (DMOs) in addressing overtourism issues effectively.
