About this page
This page describes the Digital Agency's efforts to standardize characters in local government information systems. Non-standard characters called "gaiji" (used in names) create issues including high creation costs, barriers to same-day resident certificate issuance, and data exchange problems between systems. Standardizing characters aims to improve administrative efficiency and resident services. Expert councils are reviewing character requirements to facilitate data management and inter-system information sharing across local governments nationwide.
