On March 28, the Japan Meteorological Agency Director Ryuichi Nomura visited the memorial at the eruption site in Nagano Prefecture and paid tribute to the 58 people killed and 5 missing in Japan's worst post-war volcanic disaster. He pledged to strengthen volcanic disaster prevention measures. This was the first official visit by an incumbent agency director since the memorial's completion in 2017. A lawsuit filed by bereaved families against the government and prefecture was dismissed by the Supreme Court in January.
