This page explains Japan's residential registration system for foreign residents. Starting January 2016, everyone needs a My Number card for social security, tax, and disaster prevention procedures. From October 2015, foreign residents registered in Japan began receiving My Number notifications. The My Number card for foreigners expires on the date specified on their residency certificate. The My Number must be preserved for life as it is used permanently. Additionally, following a legislative change, Japan's new residential registration management system for foreign residents began implementation on July 9, 2012.
