This page reports on a capsizing accident involving two small boats off Henoko in Nago City, Okinawa on March 16, 2026. The vessels, carrying 21 people including 18 high school students, capsized approximately 1,500 meters southeast of the coast. A ship captain and a 17-year-old female student died, while 14 others were injured. According to a crew member's testimony, they avoided shallow waters and headed offshore, where waves caused the capsizing. Although a wave warning was in effect, it was not noticed. The boat hull disappeared suddenly upon leaving the reef as low tide approached.
