This page outlines the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' initiatives for promoting 4K and 8K broadcasting. Since 2014, a "4K/8K Roadmap" has been developed, aiming for widespread 4K/8K broadcast adoption by the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 4K practical broadcasts began on CS and cable TV in 2015, followed by BS test broadcasts in August 2016. In January 2017, 19 programs from 11 companies, including NHK and five major private broadcasters, were approved. Practical 4K/8K satellite broadcasting commenced in December 2018. Existing HD broadcasts remain available alongside these new services.
