This page announces the resumption of Brazilian beef imports by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare on December 21, 2015. Imports had been suspended since December 2012 following a BSE case in Brazil. The Food Safety Commission's scientific assessment and consultations with the Brazilian government have been completed. Import conditions include restricting cattle to 48 months of age or younger, and specifying prohibited parts (SRM). Brazil will export only beef determined to be 36 months old or younger based on dental examination.
