This page provides information on public document management by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC). The Public Documents Management Law, enacted in July 2009, requires the government to manage public documents under unified rules. Public documents are categorized into three types: administrative documents, incorporated administrative organization documents, and specific historical public documents. The management process includes creation, organization, storage, registration, and disposal or transfer. The MIC enforces the Administrative Document Management Rules and publishes standard retention period standards and document management registers. The ministry also operates a reporting hotline for staff to report document falsification or mishandling, accepting reports by mail, phone, and email.
