This page is a press release from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare dated January 30, 2015, announcing the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Norway. In response, the ministry suspended import procedures for Norwegian beef and beef products, including processed goods, effective immediately. The case involved a 15-year-old female beef cattle initially suspected of BSE on January 22. Subsequent confirmation testing at a UK laboratory identified it as atypical BSE. The ministry instructed quarantine stations to implement import suspension measures. Historical import data shows relatively small quantities of Norwegian beef had been imported into Japan.
