This page provides information on natural toxins from the Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan. Although natural products are generally perceived as safe, they can contain toxic components that cause health hazards when consumed in small amounts or large quantities. Natural toxin food poisoning cases occur annually, with 111 patients reported in 2024, including 3 deaths. The page lists animal-derived natural toxins such as pufferfish toxin, ciguatera toxin, and shellfish toxins, as well as plant-derived toxins including poisonous mushrooms. The Agency advises never to collect, consume, sell, or give to others any mushrooms, wild plants, or wild seafood unless their safety can be definitively confirmed.
