This page explains the Consumer Affairs Agency's policy on designating internationally used food additives. In July 2002, a policy was adopted to align Japan's food additive regulations with international standards. Additives confirmed safe by JECFA and widely approved in the US and EU countries are designated without requiring company requests. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare conducted resource collection, testing, and safety evaluations for 42 food additives and 54 flavoring substances, with designations progressing following evaluation by the Food Safety Commission.
