About this page

This page introduces an excellent disaster prevention initiative recognized by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The "Echigo Sekikawa Taishitamon Serpent Festival" in Niigata Prefecture combines local legend with lessons from the 1967 Uetsu flood disaster. Held for over 50 years, the festival features a 82.8-meter serpent symbolizing the disaster date. All junior high students participate and learn disaster preparedness through pre-festival education. During the August 2022 heavy rainfall, residents promptly evacuated voluntarily, demonstrating the festival's effectiveness in fostering disaster prevention awareness across the community.
