This page explains Japan's MNP (Mobile Number Portability) system, which allows customers to keep their phone number when switching carriers. Since May 24, 2023, the MNP One-Stop service has enabled streamlined procedures where customers can complete the switch through the new carrier's website without obtaining an MNP reservation number separately. The traditional Two-Stop method requires obtaining a reservation number from the current carrier, then applying with the new carrier. Web procedures are free of MNP transfer fees. Major carriers including NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank, and Rakuten Mobile support this service, with MVNO providers gradually adopting it.
