About this page

This page introduces Japan's historically significant sediment control facilities. Since the Edo period, erosion control projects have been implemented to address mountain degradation from excessive deforestation. As of September 2022, three facilities are designated as National Important Cultural Properties, with over 200 registered as tangible cultural properties. These include the Joganjiji River facility, Ushifushi River main channel, and Kouyougidani Garden facility. The page also highlights facilities associated with Dutch engineer Johannes de Rijke, who guided Japan's early water management efforts. These facilities represent valuable heritage preserved and utilized for their historical and engineering significance.
