Truck driver Mizutani Mizuyo (54) was indicted for negligent driving resulting in death. According to the indictment, Mizutani was distracted by his smartphone while driving at 82 km/h when he failed to notice a stopped minivan. He hit the brakes but struck the vehicle, causing a chain-reaction collision involving an SUV and a large trailer. The victims included five family members from Shizuoka and one person from Saitama. Mizutani admitted to watching his phone while driving.
