This page reports on a fatal accident at JFE Steel's facility in Kawasaki during crane dismantling work. Five workers fell when a 500-ton cylindrical counterweight collapsed while they were excavating internal concrete to lighten it. Three workers died, one remains missing, and a 30-meter-high scaffold also collapsed, breaking through the floor. A strong wind warning was in effect at the time. Police are investigating the cause as potential negligent homicide. Both the contracting company and JFE Steel issued apology statements regarding this unprecedented accident.
