About this page

This page explains the taxonomy of Arecaceae (palm family). Palms form a monophyletic group. Botanist H.E. Moore initially organized palms into 15 major groups based on morphological characteristics. Uhl and Dransfield revised this in 1987, classifying palms into 6 subfamilies. Arecoideae is the largest subfamily with over 100 genera. Calamoideae includes climbing palms like rattans with specialized climbing organs. Ceroxyloideae has spirally arranged small to medium flowers. Coryphoideae, the second-largest subfamily, features palmately lobed leaves. Nypoideae contains only one species with underground stems. Phytelephantoideae has distinct monopodial flower clusters and unique gynoecium features.
