This page explains the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's examination of technical requirements for introducing autonomous train operations in Japan. Facing population decline, securing train drivers and maintenance staff has become difficult, especially for regional railways with tight budgets. Autonomous operation enables workforce reallocation to passenger services and security improvements. While autonomous trains have been implemented only on grade-separated new transit systems without level crossings, this study examines technical requirements for introducing autonomous operations on conventional lines with level crossings, utilizing advanced sensing, ICT, and wireless control technologies while maintaining safety and service quality.
