This page announces the launch date for regional design license plates with new regional name displays (local number plates) in 17 areas by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Distribution begins on May 11, 2020, with advance applications starting April 13. Drivers can switch to these plates when purchasing new/used vehicles or during vehicle inspections. Target regions include Shiretoko, Tomakomai, Hirosaki, Shirakawa, Matsudo, Ichikawa, Funabashi, Ichihara, Koto, Katsushika, Itabashi, Joetsu, Ise-Shima, Yokkaichi, Asuka, Izumo, and Takamatsu. Donations from applicants will support traffic improvements and tourism promotion in these areas.
