This page describes Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's promotion of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol to achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets. Since approximately 22% of Japan's emissions originate from the transport sector, efforts in this area are essential. CDM allows developed and developing countries to jointly implement emission reduction projects in developing nations, with reduction credits applicable to developed countries' targets. Transport sector CDM projects have lagged due to unestablished verification methods. The ministry is developing methodologies for estimating emission reductions and feasible CDM projects, targeting Bangkok, Thailand.
