This page reports on the disappearance of Japanese settlements. According to government surveys, 296 settlements nationwide became uninhabited during 2019-2024, double the previous five-year period. Settlements refer to small communities where neighbors support each other. Surveys have been conducted approximately every five years since 1999. Previously, settlements disappeared at rates of 100-150, but rapid depopulation and aging have accelerated this trend. Over 40% of settlements now have populations more than 50% elderly, suggesting marginal settlements are becoming Japan's default.
