This page reports on a Japan Foundation survey about young people's awareness of national issues. The percentage of 17-19 year-olds citing "increased immigration" as an important issue reached 19.2%, nearly triple the 6.7% from two years ago. Immigration ranked 4th after "declining birth rates" (41.5%), "aging" (37.1%), and "economic growth" (27.9%). The survey was conducted online in February 2026 with 1,000 respondents. In international comparisons, the UK topped at 21.1%, with Japan second. The rise reflects increased discussions about coexistence with foreigners, partly due to immigration becoming a campaign issue in the 2025 Upper House election.
