This page reports on the full implementation of the revised Suicide Countermeasures Basic Law on April 1, 2026. Local governments can now establish councils to aggregate information about children with high suicide risk and determine individual support measures. The councils consist of schools, child welfare centers, police, and private organizations. They receive information from medical institutions and schools to identify target children, particularly those with suicide attempt history or suicidal remarks. Support plans and organizational roles are then determined. With last year's child suicide deaths at 538 and 2025 seeing record highs, this system aims at early detection and concentrated support for prevention.
