This page explains the fundamentals of statistics from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. National statistics are classified into three types: survey statistics, administrative statistics, and processed statistics. Survey statistics are further divided into "basic statistics surveys" designated by the Prime Minister as particularly important, and "general statistics surveys." Statistical surveys employ two methods: census surveys that examine entire populations without sampling error but require significant resources, and sample surveys that estimate populations from samples, which are cost-effective but subject to sampling error requiring unbiased selection.
