This page reports on the 2019 inspection results for bridges and related infrastructure as part of the Road Maintenance Annual Report's second inspection cycle. Following the 2013 Road Law amendment, road managers must conduct inspections every five years. The 2019 first-year results show 17% progress for bridges, 16% for tunnels, and 18% for road attachments. However, local governments have only started remedial measures on 34% of bridges requiring repair, compared to 69% for MLIT. Critical-condition bridges increased to 812, with 255 demolished. Advanced inspection technologies like drones are used by fewer than 10% of local governments.
